SMART Freelancing
The SMART framework is commonly used to establish goals that are SMART (specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound). Using the SMART framework for goal setting can help you get the most out of your freelance endeavours. Here’s how to use SMART goals in your freelancing endeavours:
Your goals should be well-defined and Specific (S), so they can be easily measured. Goals should be more specific than “increase income,” for example “increase monthly freelance income by 20%.”
Second, your goals should be Measurable (M), meaning that you can put a number on them and monitor your development. A measurable goal might be something like, “add five new high-quality portfolio pieces showcasing different skills.”
3. Achievable (A) Make sure your goals are practical and doable under the given conditions. Freelancing is a risky endeavour, and it’s possible that setting a goal like “earn a million dollars in the first year of freelancing” is unrealistic. Rather, you should shoot for a more modest goal such as “earn $50,000 in the first year.”
4. Relevant (R): Your goals should be in line with your long-term goals for a freelance career. Focusing on web development may make it less important to aim for mastery of advanced graphic design. However, learning or refreshing your programming skills might be useful.
5. Time-Bound (T) Set a deadline by which you hope to complete your goals. The added pressure will keep you on track. Get 500 new followers in the next three months, for instance.
Taken together, the following is an illustration of a SMART goal in my career:
I plan to double my current monthly income from freelance web development to $1,500 by acquiring two new long-term clients within the next six months. I intend to accomplish this through attending networking events and making direct contact with prospective customers. This goal is SMART (meaning it is definite, attainable, relevant, and timely in terms of my web development career).
Remember that SMART goals are flexible and can be adjusted as needed. As your life and objectives evolve, you have the opportunity to adapt and grow with them. Keeping yourself motivated and focused as a freelancer is easily achievable by regularly reviewing and revising your goals.
